:: Johnny Wins in Arklow

Posted by admin on 06-05-2008

Johnny O Keeney won the Battle of the Fermoy Clubmates last weekend to claim the Mens B/C Singles title at the Arklow Irish Open. In the final he overcame the challenge of Sean Keane on a 2-1 scoreline.

Liam Hughes and Noel O Callaghan combined well to take the Open Mens Doubles title, defeating Adam Neary and Stevie O Loan in the final encounter. Noel also reached the Open Singles final but had to settle for second best on the day against his Spanish opponent, Carlos Oviedo. The seeding points from reaching the final will be enough to take him back to pole position on the National seeding list and if he retains his Kilkenny Open title in 3 weeks time, he will finish the season sitting top of the pile for yet another year.

:: Catherine and Ronan are Templederry Champions

Posted by admin on 05-05-2008

The finals of the Templederry Novice Singles Championships were held this week and they resulted in impressive victories for both Catherine Shanahan and Ronan Kinane.

Ater losing the first game against her opponent, Laura Young on a 15-4 scoreline, Catherine battled back well to take the match to a deciding tie-breaker thanks to a 15-12 victory in the second game. It was Laura that started the decider with all guns blazing and within minutes, she found herself 7-0 up and in complete control. The game however took a different twist when Catherine regained the serve and completed an amazing comeback by cliaiming the 11 winning scores without losing her serve again.

Ronan overcame the challenge of pre-tournament favouite Din Carey to take the mens title while displaying his best racquetball to date. After a slow start, Ronan took control of the game when the scores were 4 each and after that he never gave his opponent a chance as he closed out the game in impressive fashion. Ronan continued to impress in the second game and seemed to have the match gift-wrapped when serving at 14-9 but to Dins credit, he didn't throw in the towel and fought back to bring the match to a tiebreaker. The quality of Ronans serves was the difference in the decider as he served out a number of top quality aces and in doing so, he recorded a very impressive 11-2 victory.
